In our old neighborhood, neighbors chatted over fences. Newcomers were welcomed with chocolate and bread. It had been easy to find friends there. Our new community was different. It seemed that family roots grew deep. Deep as the Mississippi River that flowed past the tiny river town.

Wed moved to decrease my husbands commute to work, only thirty miles.

After living there for six months, I was ready to move back home. I was lonely for a friend. My three boys were lonely. My husband, Lonny, felt okay, but he spent his days at work.

   Lonny noticed my sinking disposition.

Shawnelle, you look unapproachable, he said. He and I were sitting in lawn chairs. Samuel, our three-year-old sat in his own little chair.

   What do you mean?

Body language. You placed our chairs fifteen yards away from everyone elses.

It doesnt matter. Im not going to have friends here. Just then Samuel looked up.

Moms right, Dad. And we just want to go home.

Thats when I knew that I needed an attitude adjustment. I didnt want my boys to learn that the way to work through a tough time was to behave wounded and bitterly.

Over the next few months I smiled when I didnt feel like it. We signed up for reading programs at the librar学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!y and frequently walked to the parks and the bike path along the river.

One afternoon Samuel and I climbed up the stairs to the library activity room. A woman who I hadnt seen b学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!efore sat at a long table with a tiny boy.

Hi, she said. Im Tammy. Do you need a seat? Theres one right here.

I sat down next to Tammy. Soon class was over, and we still had a lot to say. Why dont you come over later? Tammy asked. I live on a farm. Theres plenty of room for the kids to run. We went. And since that day, weve been back a million times.

When I look back, Im grateful for that tough time. I learned to persevere. 学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!Im glad I didnt give up.

Face-to-face communication involves much more than the spoken wordIn fact, we often communicate our feelings to others through our body language学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯! without realizing we are doing soWe communicate through posture, gesture and facial expressionBut the eyes also play an important part in this unspoken languageWilliam Shakespeare called the eyes "a window to the soul," and you can learn to look through that window and better understand a person's body language by reading eye movement

Begin a conversation and ask a simple questionWatch carefully for eye movement during the responseIf the person looks up, he or she is thinking or forming picturesThis is also a sign of a visual thinkerLooking up and to the left shows recalling a memory, while looking up and to the right could show imaginative construction or lying

If the person looks down, this could be a sign of obedience or even blameLooking down and to the left can show a person talking to themselvesLooking down and to the right can show that they are feeling strong emotion

Looking sideways can indicate distraction or checking out a potential threat, but a sideways glance can also show angerIn addition, eyes that look side to side often show shiftiness and lying

A glance usually indicates a desire for somethingGlancing at a door could show a desire to leave the room, while a glance at a person could indicate a desire to talk to themA glance is also used when it is forbidden to look at something

A person who is lying to you may hold eye contact longer than normalIn addition, this person might smile with his mouth but not with his eyesSmiling with the eyes is difficult to do if the emotion is not genuine

Good relationships are definitely good sources of happiness in life. We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different preferences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key factors in making relationships work.

It is often said that building good relationships is all about communication. Good communication indeed governs a good relationship -- knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, how to say it, and accepting that some things are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must 学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!be broadened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work, from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or abou学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!t your friend that you do not know, communication is essential in these aspects of the relationships.

Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him all the time. You and your friend come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environments so there may be disagreements here and there. However, it is important in making relationships work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise (妥协) at times are essential.

As the relationship lasts longer, you may also discover things about you and your friend that you may not have known before. Therefore, supporting each other on both your "hidden selves" can also make a good relationship.

Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.

    B. a white lie is necessary sometimes
    C. compromises are essential at any time
    D. your friends need to have the same backgrounds with you

  3. According to the text, which of the following are important for a good relationship?
    a. communication   b. support    c. love      d. hidden selves

四、任务型阅读

Ban Ki-moon was made the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations. In his speech at the ceremony of his taking office, he thanked all the Member States for placing confidence in him, and also expressed his deepest respect and appreciation to all the leaders and people of the Member States for their strong support.

His remark about the former Secretary-General, who he said had guided their Organization into the 21st century and had made the UN truly vital to peace, prosperity and human dignity around the world, was particularly impressive. Mr. Ban Ki-moon stated in his speech that he had already made up his mind to build upon the already-made achievements of the UN.

The new Secretary-General thinks the UN is needed now more than ever before. The UN’s major task in the previous century was to keep countries from fighting each other. In the new century, it is very clear that the UN’s most important task is to strengthen the inter-state system so that humanity may be better served. We need competent and responsible states to meet the needs of “we the peoples” for whom the UN was created. And the world’s peoples will not be fully served unless peace, development and human rights, the three pillars of the UN, are advanced together with great efforts and equal determination.

As the new Secretary-General, he is not as proud as people thought he might be. He said he was far from perfect and he would need the support, cooperation and trust from all the Member States. And he faithfully promised to serve them well, with all of his heart and to the best of his abilities.

There is also something exciting he said about young people. It’s his hope that young boys and girls of today will grow up knowing that the UN is working hard to build a better future for them. As Secretary-General, he will hold their hopes and hear their demands.
